Welcome to the official website for the landmark PBS series The American President.  The series and this educational outreach website are sponsored by the New York Life Insurance Company.

Website Objectives:  This website, which was developed in coordination with the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), will provide teachers and students with exciting tools and resources to learn and discover about a uniquely American idea -- the presidency.

Website Features:  It begins with the remarkable 10-part series which premiered on PBS on April 9, 2000.

Co-produced by Kunhardt Productions and Thirteen/WNET in New York, the series looks at the presidency as never before. Teachers and students will discover many resources on this website that make learning about the presidency interactive and fun.

The Series: Learn about this remarkable 10-hour series in this section, which includes show descriptions, audio interviews with the producers, and lesson plans related to each show and president.

Presidential History Resources:  This comprehensive section of the website includes:

  • New, in-depth biographies on all the presidents, created in a unique partnership between teachers and top historians.  This section includes galleries on each president
  • Historical documents organized for easy research and review
  • Lesson plans on the presidents
  • A unique and continually expanding "presidential glossary" -- from the nicknames of the presidents to their campaign slogans

Election 2000:   This section focuses on the upcoming presidential election and includes:

"The War Room" Game:  This 3 to 5 day simulation game lets students become the campaign manager for the candidate of their choice.  Students must guide their candidate through the primaries, then defeat their opponent in the general election.  A wide range of pitfalls line the road to the presidency -- from funding shortages and daily crises to each candidate's "dark secret."  Experience the thrills of running a campaign (includes audio).

"OurVote": A political magazine written by students for students!
